Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church | AODK :: Architecture Office :: David Krebs

The project is an addition to an existing historic building sitting on hilltop overlooking the fields below. The project includes a new main entry with a covered drop-off, gathering area/fellowship hall addition and classroom addition to an existing 5,220 S.F. sanctuary building also included in the new addition is a warming kitchen, restrooms and office area. The goal was to provide an existing facility with a flexible addition that is able to accommodate multiple contemporary church functions within the most efficient amount of space possible, take advantage of the views provided by the steeply sloping site and allow the existing late 1800's sanctuary building to stand proud of any building addition. The solution was to align the new addition along the top edge of a steep hillside allowing most spaces to have views over the valley below. A courtyard capped with a transparent connection between existing narthex and the new addition has been created to minimize the impact of the new construction on the original church building as well as allow the existing stained glass of the sanctuary to remain. Finally, the central gallery space has been equipped with folding partition walls that allow for several configurations of the space including banquet room, classrooms, and open gallery.
